Developed and curated by Garth Gratrix.
A groundbreaking exhibition of 24 living LGBTQIA+ artists and loaned work by Derek Jarman. Conceived as a collaborative gathering of queer abstract and expressive content, Wink Wink flirts with the space and its audiences with a reveal and conceal formal frolic.
It is both clear and clandestine it is platforming of queer material. All artists, through their unique and distinct use of material, language, and concept; challenging societal norms, dismantling or refusing stereotypes, and transcending conventional understandings of identity and lived experience.
By presenting these works in accredited Museum & Gallery spaces we anchor them to ideologies of inclusion and intersectionality. Ensuring physical works by queer artists are commissioned, programmed and acquired.
Commissioned by The Whitaker Museum & Art Gallery, UK.
Exhibition ran from 18th May – 23rd July 2023.
Supported by Brian Mercer Trust and Arts Council England National Portfolio Programme.
